Multi-Colored Vortex In Variation GIVEAWAY

I love scrappy quilts, and have a stash of non-repro fabrics...so when I made my own Vortex In Variation (VIV) I decided to break out of my reproduction genre.

Big prints - they worked!
Directional - no problem!
OK, a repro snuck in there but I like that!

I love it, but I need your help.
What color should the surround be?  The corners?

I was VERY BAD
First let me show you my BAD selection:

I confess to you I didn't listen to DD, and I tried this disaster...She warned me...

I thought the black and white would be neutral - and the corners a good contrast to all the color...black works with everything?
Proved that wrong!

So it's unpinned ... and will sit until the new year.
I have other red green posts written to share the rest of the month.

How about a giveaway?

Multi-Color VIV

Leave a comment on this podst with your color suggestion for the surround.

The center includes 37 prints, so some are repeated.
It will be a separate pattern with the placements numbered on the paper set.

Or, should I make it a 60" square quilt, with or without a border?

With the RNG magic I'll pick a couple of winners from the comments on New Years Day!
Prize:  Some colorful FQ's to start 2012 with!

Have a great week!

  1. Spectacular quilt center. I have no clue about what to suggest for the borders except keep it pretty simple. There's a lot going on in the center.

  2. Oh my! I love it with all the colors! I'm very bad at colors, but my first reaction is red. lol! Probably a bad one? I don't know. I can't wait to see what you choose! Thanks for the giveaway. You're a sweetheart!

  3. Monitors are all a bit different, so my suggestion could be waaaaaaaaaaaaay off. From my computer a grey or greyish navy might look nice. I think the darker would make the background receed so the vortex is in the forefront. I don't think I would choose a red/orange/yellow since they would make the background come forward competing with the picing you have done. Do I make any sense at all? No matter, have fun - that's the most important part!

  4. I think a med-dark color would work the best, it's a wonderful piece. I just don't know how you piece something so complex as that.

  5. Awesome, awesome VIV, Dawn!!! Is the background of the applique really white because it looks tan in the picture. I vote against tan. Whichever colors you pick for the surround and applique will stand out in the center when you first look at the quilt so - which fabrics do you want to see first? I like the red polka dot and the green that ends about 5:00 o'clock. I think I'd pick one of them but I don't know about the other.

  6. Wow Dawn! It's so not like what I was expecting...so different from the two colour version. Powerful! My vote would be go large scale colourful print for the background with a contrasting large print for the applique. If you're gonna go loud, you should go all out.

  7. THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL!
I'D CHOOSE THE MEDUIM-TO-DARKISH BLUE YOU'VE ALREADY USED FOR PIECING AT ABOUT 7 PM ON YOUR PHOTO. THANKS FOR SHARING!
    ♥ MERRY CHRISTMAS ♥

  8. Since the centre is so different from the classic design I think you can afford to make the background different too. Perhaps a darker grey or brown grey with a pattern that reads solid, followed by a pieced border of the multi coloured squares around the edge. Amazing, whatever you do.

  9. I love the square version without a border. I have no clue for a border color. I'd just keep auditioning until I found something I liked. Good luck with it! That's really neat that you are selling the pattern on Etsy.

  10. I've had a good look and since you have some Kaffe's and bright fabrics I would go with either a complimentary colour from one of Kaffe's fabrics that you have used or a opposite of the colour wheel. If you love the blues in your vortex go with a purple or teal blue green or for contrast orange. If you love the pinks you can go purples or a citrus green. I would like to see a lovely blue green with applique in lime green and purple! But it is your quilt! Love the vortex!

  11. Have you seen the circles of Flying Geese Judy Mathieson (sp?) puts around here Mariner's Compass creations? I'm wondering about trying something like that--using a shade of red or blue pulled from the quilt. But I also like it square--and I am a border person, so I would border it.

  12. Some of your lovely acid green. Make the centre really twirl.

  13. That is amazing! So glad you didn't use the black;)
I will never make this quilt so don't put me in the drawing.

  14. Can you come up with a pieced border that would twirl the other way? Maybe a square of each color, but moved one to the left. Otherwise, I kinda like the one you have, but in burgundy. VermontPines@aol.com

  15. I just sent you a picture. I vote for a purple background with yellow applique that matches the yellow in the quilt. Or maybe the purple with cornerstones of a mini vortex.

  16. Wow! This is sooooo cool! Why don't you just send it to me and I will finish it for you! (Lol!!) I think something very simple. I'm not sure how big it is...is it too big to just bind (leaving it a circle) and hang on the wall?

  17. Love the scrapy look. I'm always into red!

  18. Oh my gosh this is stunning and so much fun. What a great treat to wake up to over coffee. You just MADE MY DAY!!! You have such great fabric sense. You'll work this thru and it'll be amaze-zingggg!

  19. *hmmmm* I have two ideas. One would be to leave it alone and finish it as a circle. The second would be to simply add a plain border (blue?) and leave off the applique or at least simplify the applique. The 'vortex' is quite busy as a scrappy piece and all the work of the applique is lost.

  20. WOWSERS! I am SO impressed with your range of talents when it comes to quilt designing, Dawn. I think you should go with red and a nod to the original antique quilt that inspired the pattern.

  21. I'm thinking stay a bit on the wild side and use a tourqoise background with red applique....I think it could hold it's ground with the center.

  22. I like the idea of a square-ish quilt with a wide border to end the swirls. Maybe put a few twirling blocks into a pieced border to carry the movement from the quilt into the border. Good Luck! and WOWza - that is some quilt!

  23. Wow, you are a brave one.
    My suggestion:
    Light background and red appliques.

  24. I think a black would look good or at least something quite dark. It would give the illusion of looking down a tunnel or perhaps like looking into a kaleidoscope!!

  25. Hi,
For the border I was trying to put a light purple fabric and for aplliqué a darker purple. (pour la bordure j'essaierai de mettre un tissu mauve et pour l'appliqué un mauve plus foncé ou violet). What do you think?
    Bonne chance!

  26. Light background with red appliques.

  27. Lovely patchwork!! Congrats on expanding your comfort zone!! Hmmm, for me, I'd pick tone on tone, maybe a light blue - make it look like it's floating away in a sky??

The quilting is going to make a big difference too! Good luck!

  28. I love your version of Vortex. I think I would choose a deep red-orange for the applique and maybe somehow add a bit of the blue...the two colors that are together in the upper right of your photo. I'd choose the lighter surround. It will be gorgeous no matter how you finish. What a lot of work there!!!!!
