Fall Quilts

Books are usually aren't on the floor...really!!
Today I rotated some quilts out for fall and thought you might like to see them.

Even though the room is in the process of holding two rooms of furniture, I still wanted some fall color.  My next home project is new carpet and I need to empty entire rooms into others.

You might recognize Calico Paradise, if not you can read about it HERE.
I have some additional photos of the scrappy pyramids below.

The scrappy pyramid quilt is a completely hand sewn antique quilt.  See the white dots on the green?  They are the knots of the quilting thread - all the knots are on the front of this quilt.

Deep wonderful green borders surround the pyramids.  Even the borders and binding are hand applied.

The fan quilting is a little under 1/2" apart.

There is a multitude of stripes cut every which way.

This makes the quilt all the more interesting.

More knots on top for your viewing pleasure.

How about some more fabrics?

Do you like the knots on top?  Would you do it?  I'm thinking I need to on a doll quilt this way.
How about the fabrics, do you have a favorite?
Thanks for taking time to leave a comment!

  1. Beautiful quilts! I have never seen knots on the top (unless they have popped through accidently)--how interesting. I could maybe do it on a doll quilt, but I'd probably struggle to leave a large quilt that way. I know, I need to loosen up! : )
Favorite fabrics--the fourth photo from the bottom, the two triangles along the top row, pointing down. Got them? Not sure why, but those two caught my eye.

  3. Awesome quilt! It's always hard for me to pick a favorite fabric. Maybe the squiggle and dots.

  4. Thanks for sharing! Calico Paradise is still on my list! It would be hard for me to put the knots on the top but for the reproduction effect I guess you could - lol! I enjoy seeing the antique quilts you show and the neat polka dots used!

  5. Unique to have knots on top but not something I would do.

  6. Viewing pleasure is exactly right! What a wonderful antique quilt. My favorite fabric has to be the very cheddary solid cheddar setting fabric - love it. I like that one red triangle with the dark circles as well :0) I don't think I could leave knots on top - it adds charm certainly - but I don't think I could do it - maybe like you say on a doll quilt... My grandma's quilts have knots on the top too - even the one I slept under last night :0)

  7. I'm still in love with Calico Paradise. It's such a gorgeous quilt. Love seeing both quilts -- and the fabrics in the antique!

  8. Perfect fall quilts! Thanks for the fabric close ups - I especially like the black, brown and red combination prints ...oh and the last ombre one. Not sure about the knots on top though - was that a common choice?

  9. I'm crazy about the fabrics in photoa 4 and 6, all those wiggledy squiggledy shapes

  10. Interesting about the knots on top. The quilter just didn't have enough "umph" to pop the knot. They just wanted to add a little texture.

  11. I love the fabric in the next to last photo. As far as the knots on top...that is something I am not use to seeing. I would probably have a hard time leaving the knots on top.

  12. I've never "met" these quilts before. It was very interesting to read about the Calico Paradise in different posts (thanks for the links). I was delighted to see all the different fabric used in the scrappy pyramid. No, I would never been able to leave the knots on top like that. Only thinking about doing it and I can almost hear grandma getting "annoyed" at my work. LOL. Thanks so much for sharing your decor with us. Must fun.

  13. Very nice! The antique quilts are so wonderful. I'd never purposely put knots on the top, but it wouldn't keep me from purchasing a vintage quilt.

  14. Interesting to see the knots on top - I haven't seen a quilt made that way before. I'm not sure I could bring myself to put a knot on top, but its fun to see a quilt done this way, and speculate on the reason behind it. I love all the fabrics in this quilt, especially the cheddar, red and dot fabrics! Pyramid quilts are a personal favorite!

  15. Nope...I'm way to anal to have those knots on top of my quilts! But it's fun to see them in your antique quilt. I could never pick a favorite fabric - LOVE the close ups of them.

  17. Love your quilts! So ironic to see your selection as I've been thinking about hand stitching a (similar) triangle quilt myself. Never seen the knots on top before. Very interesting.:)

  20. You have such beautiful quilts to enjoy hanging on your walls. I popped back in time to see Calaco Paradise, it's such an amazing quilt. It's wonderful to see so many closeups of the fabrics. There's a Sydney quilter called Carolyn Davis who does knots on top. I really like the way it adds a human touch, and a little feature.

  21. Love both of the quilts but especially the closeups of the fabrics! Knots on top? Don't think I'd like it but am curious why she did it that way.
