Decisions, Decisions, While I Reverse Sew

I finished the "back' - which is my front, of Gooische Stars.
(Promenade In A Dutch Garden book)
Well...except for the border.

How can a 3" border be so hard to select?

The green is probably the closest to the original.
The red is nice.
The yellow is a beautiful print.

While I contemplate the border...
I'm reverse sewing the binding on my Hindeloopen quilt.

Once I read the antique quilts of this type generally are knife edge finishes, I had to change it.

I thought about it and it bothered me, so off it comes.

Back to the border - which fabric would you use?
I'm looking forward to what you have to say!

  1. I like the red, but as you say the green is closer to the original.

  2. If I was going for replication, I'd use the green. If I was going with what clicks for me, I'd use the red. I think the yellow is a beautiful print, but it steals the show, IMHO. Great looking little quilt.
Please explain to me what a knife-edge binding is. Love the term "reverse sewing"! : )

  3. Knife Edge: Fold the raw edges under and hand stitch. I have a couple antique quilts that are finished with this technique.
Here's a blog post that shows an example in great detail:

  4. Okay, I'm going with the consensus - the green is closest to the photo in the book - but I really like the red. I love this quilt!!! What size are the blocks? May have to make this one, just from seeing yours!

  6. I really like the red too. I guess it depends on how close you want to stay to the original. The green works also, but I like the red.

  7. Beautiful work. I love your fabrics on both quilts! The border fabric is a puzzle, but I'm sure you have a gut feeling about which way you really want to go.:) Good luck with your knife edge finish too.

  8. I choose yellow. It is such a great compliment that looking at the photo only before reading what you had written, I thought it was the only choice there. The yellow brings out the yellows and other colors in the quilt center.

I've been looking at the same quilt book and recognized your piece. In my opinion the yellow has the same feel as the original quilt.

  9. Ok, this is strange, because red is my favorite color, so you would think that would be my choice, but...I like the green the best!

  10. I like the green AND red fabrics. I think the yellow draws your eye away from the piecework. (it's gorgeous though)

  11. I vote for the yellow - I think it will correspond nicely with the yellow in the center star (and set it off), plus I'm partial to Den Haan chintzes :-)

  12. Add another vote for the red. Your quilt is fantastic. You did it so quickly. I love the yellow fabric. Hope you have another quilt in mind just for that fabric.

  13. Adding the red border makes it your own rather than a direct copy. Love the red!!!

  14. You are so torturing me. OMG. Gorgeous...... Border fabric -- I'm not sure. I'm not a decisive person. lol! I'm torn between the brown and the red myself......

  15. I vote for RED--it just really gives the whole quilt a "punch".

  16. I like the red. It is very beautiful! What is a knife edge?

  17. The yellow is such an interesting fabric but the red grabs me more. The dark piece more like what is in the picture but also a bit more boring. But a lot going on in the main body of the quilt.

  18. I like the red, it just speaks to me in that photo of all three. Good luck deciding.

  19. I LOVE that yellow print but it is shouting a bit over the blocks. I vote for the green!

Knife edge is making me curious too.

  20. You've already had lots of comments but I'll throw in my 2 cents. The one of the left (it looks brown on my monitor but it's probably the one you're referring to as green?) almost disappears which, in my opinion is great because it sets off the center of the quilt so we focus on it. My next choice would be the red because it goes well with the center. The yellow, imho, is too strong. Looking forward to seeing what you choose!

  21. I'm with Sue....the red makes it your own!

  22. Love your work, but I'm no hjelp in making a choice for the borderfabric.

  23. They are all beautiful, but I have to say it is definitely the red one!!!!! I'm not familiar with the 'knife edge' term, lets know more about that when you have time!!

  24. Is that on the left a green? It seems like a brown to me. Anyway, looking at the picture I would say that fabric on the lefthand side works best, although - if I were not to follow the original pattern to the letter - I would put a small border (0.5 - 0.75" , depending on the size of the quilt and the larger border) on it first. I do not have the book yet, but I don't think (looking at the picture) that is according to the pattern.

  25. Oh dear, I like them all! The brown looks closer to the original, red's my favorite color and the yellow is really quite interesting too. That is a beautiful quilt!

  26. I think the red really brightens up the quilt but I also think it takes some of the attention away from the center so I think I would go with the brown/green.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I would personally choose the green/brown like the original because it frames the multicolor center better without adding another strong color. It's strange because my first choice was the yellow one!!!

  28. I'm partial to red so I'd pick it. As long as the red is period appropriate, the quilt doesn't have to be identical to the original. Your quilt is lovely!

  29. Beautiful colours, I just visited Holland and admired the wonderful quilts in The Haan&Wagemakers. Bought the book too.
Will leave the decision in your capable hands ;))

  30. Gorgeous quilt, Dawn! Whichever border you choose will make it a wonderful quilt!

  31. I have to say the yellow - brings your eye from all the spots of yellow throughout the quilt out to the edge - I love it !
Of course, it has to be your favorite though.
    Best wishes

  32. I'm partial to the red. I'm allwaya partial to red. I love red. But the brown looks mice too. It's a pretty top .

  33. I think you can never go wrong with green, but BOY OH BOY do I love that fabric on the right! I don't know if it's right for this quilt, but it will be delicious in something *s*

  34. This is a busy quilt and even if both the red and the yellow are beautiful fabrics too, I would chose the green.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I prefer the red, but the green is a close second.

    ReplyDelete
  36. It all depends how close you want to duplicate the original. It is sure a beauty!!

  37. OMG drop dead gorgeous!! makes me want to sew something right now!!
what ever you decide it will fabulous

  38. I think you need to make three just so you can use each border fabric! this is already stunning!

  39. I'm slow reading blogs of late so I bet you have that border on already, would have gone with the green. Really hoping that the fires are not too close, sad to see the Royal Gorge with fires that close and see the homes lost in other parts of CO, even lives may have been lost from what news I can get here.

    take care,
    Nancy

  40. ...hhhmmmm, I choose green!!

Yes, with quilt making it is CONSTANT decisions and that is where I get bogged down because I just can't seem to stop seeing ALL the options!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. i love that yellow but i think that the green might be the best choice . . .
can hardly wait to see which you have chosen.
